Here are the kids writing and mailing their letters to Santa. There is a mailbox in the center of town that is just for letters to Santa. I thought this was so cute. Then that same night Santa was driving around town with the firemen handing out candy canes. Secaucus is a really cute town sometimes.
Jacob has finally started walking. He still crawls most of the time, but he will get up and walk around a lot more now. He is always so smiley when he does it....like he is so proud of himself.

I love this
I think I may be loosing my job as family book reader. Reading has been a little slow coming for Christopher but he is starting to enjoy it and I love to walk in the room and find him reading a book to his brothers and sister. I think he finally realizes that he is a reader.
Putting up the Christmas tree
We got our Christmas tree Saturday night. This is the latest we've ever put up the tree. We usually put it up the day after Thanksgiving. I love getting a real tree....the look, the smell...it's the best! It was so freezing that night that we had to get some yummy hot chocolate to warm us up. Jacob really loved it !

Christmas pillowcases
I can't believe it's taken me 7 years to make these. Jeff's mom had Christmas pillowcases for all her kids and I thought that was such a fun tradition and always planned on making them. I finally got around to it this year. (Jacob has one too, but he isn't really using a pillow yet) ;) I'm kind of on a pillowcase kick right now. I found the easiest way to make them and they are so quick. If anyone wants the instructions I can email them to you. (I found them on some blog and I can't remember where now).

Future Engineer
I am posting this because I don't want to forget it in case this picture gets lost (and because I love Michael and he is a really cute kid). Michael drew this and told me it was a rocket powered shovel. He described how it works and its many uses. I can totally see Michael being an inventor or engineer someday....or also just a really cool super powered construction worker. (I'm pretty sure that's why he thought up this shovel to begin with...because he wants to be a construction worker).

Halloween...my 200th post....does that mean anything?
Okay, I'll be honest....Halloween is my least favorite holiday....very last on this list....even behind Columbus Day which I'm not even sure how you would celebrate. I know Halloween is well loved by many (and I am completely amazed at how creative my friends are during Halloween. They are way more creative than I am...yes you Naomi and Mistie), but I dislike creepy things and unruly teenagers roaming the neighborhood causing trouble and begging for candy. I don't decorate for Halloween and I'm relieved when it's over. Sorry everyone, it's just how I feel. :) I do love fall though and get good use out of all the pumpkins in decorating for fall. Despite my personal feelings I do enjoy being crafty so the only enjoyment I get from this morbid holiday is making costumes for my kids, (and the fact that they enjoy dressing up and getting candy). I try to make them costumes that they can use for dress-up after Halloween is over. So this year Christopher and Michael wanted to be Billy Blazes from Rescue Heroes (a 90's TV cartoon based on souped up community helpers like firemen and policemen who rescue people....no villains involved). So firefighter costumes is what they got. Annie wanted to be a bumblebee....a pink bumblebee. And Jacob was the obligatory frog, which is the same costume Christopher and Michael wore at that age. It's fun to see each one of them wear it, (I didn't make that costume). :) The costumes are nothing special (it's amazing what you can do with duct tape), but they liked them and that's what matters. Christopher had fun during his school Halloween parade which was really cute.
Happy Halloween !(happy it's over, haha). Bring on Thanksgiving and Christmas (yeah!)

Old News
Well, I actually finished the play kitchen months ago, but I never posted any pictures of it. My sewing machine broke and so I wasn't able to finish the curtains for the window until this week when I borrowed a friends machine. So here it is. Annie has been playing with it for a while and really likes it. It was definitely one of those projects that I just dragged out forever and by the end I was kind of tired of it. But I'm glad I made it for Annie and hope she enjoys it for a long time. I could not have done it without Jeff. He helped me figure out and put on the oven door so it would be strong. I definitely need to make more play food though because I think she is tired of making pancakes and sandwiches. :)

Happy Birthday Michael !
Wow, 5 years old. Today I reflected on that crazy day 5 years ago when little Michael came into the world a little over 2 weeks early and was almost born in my friend Maile's car...ya, long story. It doesn't seem like it was that long ago. But here we are with our grown up boy Michael who is definitely 5 years old and has so many talents to show for those 5 years. Michael is so imaginative and has such a sweet heart. He is quite shy until you get to know him, but he'll be your best friend once you win his trust. :) Today he got breakfast in bed and got to open his presents first thing in the morning. We played at the park and had cupcakes with some friends in the afternoon and went out to eat in the evening. When I asked Michael what he wanted me to make for his birthday dinner he said he wanted, "chicken nuggets, fries and sauce with Brother Arguelles." Our friend from church works at a restaurant and we go out to eat there on occasion. That worked for me....I didn't have to cook. It just so happens that Bro. Arguelles has the same birthday as Michael so they got to celebrate together. It was a fun day. We love you Michael!!
A few fun facts about Michael: He likes drawing (but doesn't care much for writing yet)
He tells an amazing bed time story
He is a picky eater but his favorite food is spaghetti or chicken in most forms...well actually most meats.
His favorite primary song is "I Am A Child of God"
He mostly likes to just play with his siblings.
He loves wearing his suit on Sundays.
He likes to snuggle up and read books.

No Bullies....or pigs.
Today was the beginning of the No Bullying campaign in Secaucus school district. I know this is a big problem in schools around the country. I haven't really seen any of that at Christopher's school but I'm sure it happens, probably more in the older grades. I'm glad that they talk more about it at school and are really taking the initiative to make sure that children are safe and happy while at school.
Christopher was mostly excited that they all got this cool t-shirt and got to have a "fun" day. It sounds like they didn't do much work today, except for their spelling test, but they got to have a big assembly and do bowling and a magic show. I'm not really sure what this has to do with not bullying, but I'm sure they tied it in somehow. :)
Here's a funny story about Christopher. The other night at bedtime we were reading and the story was talking about how the family that lived on a farm had a pig. This is how the conversation went:
Michael- "Was it a baby pig mom?"
Me- "No, I think it was probably a big pig."
Christopher- "Ya, like you mom."
Pause.........
Me- "Are you calling me a big pig?" (smile)
Christopher (unabashedly)- "No, I just mean it was big like you are big, not a kid like us."
Me- "Oh, that makes me feel better."
I just had to laugh. Kids totally don't know when they put their foot in their mouth. I recall a conversation similar to this one where I got called a cow also. Good thing I don't get offended easily. But it did make me want to go down to the basement and run about 10 miles on the treadmill. :)

Happy Birthday Jacob !!
Oh, I love my little Jacob bug. I can't believe my baby is a year old already. That first year is just so precious and now I no longer have a baby....he is a growing boy already. Jacob isn't walking yet and he doesn't seem to care too much about learning to walk. Oh well, that will come soon enough I'm sure. Jacob is such a happy baby. Of all my children he has been the most content as a baby. He sleeps well and eats well and is pretty content to let his brothers and sister play around with him. He loves taking baths and snuggling and reading books. He loves eating and is becoming very independent. He will sometimes spit out food I put in his mouth but pick it back up and put it in himself. :) Jacob likes to be outside and has the sweetest toothy grin. He has 8 of his front teeth and is working on some of the back ones already.
We had a pretty low key 1st birthday...just family fun, presents and cake at home. Jacob dug into his cake pretty easy. He thought it was fun to play with but wasn't so sure he wanted to eat in untill Jeff put a little bite in his mouth and then he liked it. After a warm bath and clean jammies he went right to bed. It was a fun day to celebrate our little (big) man. :)

Hikers are friendly
We try to take a trip every fall when the leaves change color. We decided to go to Vermont this year and to combine it with our conference getaway (since we try to go stay at a hotel for conference as well). This years trip was really fun. We decided since Christopher and Michael are only in 1st grade and kindergarten they could miss a couple days of school (don't worry we did their homework in the car on the way home). ;) We left Thursday night and got back super late Monday night. We drove up to Burlington Vermont and found a fun hotel to park ourselves for the weekend. Here is the funny story. We like to live on the wild side and rarely reserve a hotel beforehand. We just find one when we get where we are going. (Sometimes they look nice online but aren't when you get there). Evidently there are lots of colleges in the part of Vermont we went to and most places were completely booked up for parents weekend. We just kept driving north and eventually got too tired so we parked the car and slept...in the car....for most of the night. Ya, we're crazy like that. Actually the kids slept pretty well. Jeff and I....not so well. But we woke up and finally found a great place that had one suite left and they let us check in at 7am. So then we all crashed again and slept till like 10am. Ahhh, memories. :) Friday was really rainy so we just drove around and saw the area and swam in the pool. Saturday we watched conference and took a few little nature walks. Sunday we watched conference which was so amazing. I loved Pres. Uchtdorfs talk, (he is so inspiring), Pres. Packer (he just tells it like it is), Pres. Monson (he is so Christ like) and Pres. Eyrings, (he is so kind and wise). They were all great talks.
So, on to the title of this post. On Monday we decided to hike Mt. Mansfield, the highest peak in Vermont. Now, when I say highest peak...that is in New England terms. It is 4400 feet in elevation...which I think is what the valley's of Utah are. :) But still, it was such a great hike and a great experience for the kids. We drove up this super steep windy road to the base of the hike. (There were actually many different trails going to the top of this mountain, some as long as 200+ miles coming from Canada). But we did the last 1.5 miles to the top. It wasn't super long but most of it was rock and so it was lots of rock scrambling and you had to follow the little markers closely. The boys LOVED it and they did the entire 3 mile round trip without any help, expect for a little hand holding where there were some ledges. Annie walked some of it too and then Jeff carried her on his shoulders...and had Jacob in the carrier on his front. My hero!!
Anyway, we passed many people going both directions and only saw one other child who I think went all the way to the top. Everyone was so nice and most people said, "My, you have your hands full" (which I hear daily here in NJ). But everyone was so kind to the kids and told them how great they were and how they should be so proud of themselves and what great little hikers they were. At the top everyone came up to us and wanted to take our pictures and talk to us and tell us they've never seen anything like it before...a family with 4 kids at the top of this mountain. It really was a great experience and I think the boys were very proud of themselves.

Happy Birthday Anne !
This is the beginning of the birthday month in our family. Within a month, half of us have a birthday. :)
Anne turned 3 on Friday. I just love my little girl. She has so much personality and loves her family so much. She gives the best hugs and kisses. It's funny because she is so tiny that no one that sees her believes she is 3, but sometimes I believe she is more like 4 or 5 because she talks so mature. The other day she was sitting next to Jacob and it's hard to believe but they are almost the same size...just 2 years apart. :)
Here are some of Annie's favorites: playing with Jacob, taking baths, chewing bubble gum, mint chocolate ice cream, changing her clothes multiple times a day, getting new clothes or shoes (she gets so excited), drawing, sitting on Christopher's bed and looking at books with her brothers, getting tickled by daddy, puppy dogs, reading books with mommy, swinging at the park, and laughing...she has the best laugh.
I love having a daughter and since it looks like she is the only one I will get, I'm go glad that her little spirit came to our family. She is so spirited and kind and we all love her so much.
Happy Birthday Annie-bananie !
Breakfast in bed is one of my favorite birthday traditions. The kids love it so much!
They all had a fun (dirty) day playing and so we did baths before cake and gifts so that is why they are all in their pajamas in most of the pictures. :) Plus I have the hardest time getting Annie to actually look at the camera...she is too busy to bother with me taking pictures. :)
Also, I had so much fun making the flower cupcakes. I made the flower tops out of candy melts. I saw the idea on Bakerella.

Proud mama
We had back to school night last night. Jeff and I enjoyed meeting Christopher's teacher and can see why he likes her so much. We already knew Michael's teacher because Christopher had her last year and we really like her too. They had some of the kids work there for us to see and there was something from each boy that impressed me.
Each child in Michael's class had made a little person and drawn it like themself. Then it had a little briefcase with some clues about themselves and said, "Who am I?" A lot of the kids wrote about the toys they had or their pets. Michael's said, "I have 2 brothers and 1 sister". I liked that he was proud of his family. We love Michael!
In Christopher's class he had also drawn a picture of his family. But we also got to look at his notebook that they write in every morning. One morning they were supposed to write about what they did over the weekend. Christopher's page said, "Over the weekend I went to church" and he drew a picture of the church. I love that he wrote that. He could have written about playing or anything else, but I like that he associates church with the weekend. What a good little missionary. We love Christopher!
Annie and Jacob are enjoying their play time at home together and get along well. Annie likes to play with playdough when she has it all to herself and Jacob is actually saying a few words...hi and mama. We love Annie and Jacob!

First day of school
* sorry for this long post. The blog is sort of turning into a family journal of sorts and I don't write in my personal journal as often as I should so I didn't want to miss documenting this fun day.
Then we went with Michael to the gym for the kindergarten opening. The principal talks for a little bit and then they lead the kids to the class. Michael has the same teacher Christopher had last year and we are very happy about that. But Michael was getting more and more afraid, (which we expected) and didn't want to go in when it was time. Last year they didn't let the parents go to the classroom at all and that was a little hard, but this year they let them walk them to the room. But when it came down to it I had to actually pick Michael up and take him in and put him in his chair. It could have been worse but he wasn't really going for it at first. But his teacher is so nice and said I could stay for a little while if needed (she said, "You have special privileges") :) But I just got him settled and gave him a hug and Jeff and I left. I knew he would be fine and love it. I had a few tears because I knew he was worried, but I did much better than last year where I was sobbing as much as Christopher was. This year I already knew his teacher and the school and I was much more comfortable with it all.
When I picked them up they both talked forever about how much fun they had. Christopher looked a little overwhelmed. Not sad or anything but I'm sure the first day of first grade is a lot of new information compared to kindergarten. We all went and got an ice cream cone and came home. The boys played so well together all afternoon, which was nice compared to the bickering they have been doing lately. :) We had a fun dinner (spaghetti buses- pict below) and then went and vacuumed out the car. They went to bed pretty easily since they had such a tiring, eventful day. I'm really excited for this school year and all the fun things they will learn. I can't believe I have 2 kids in school now. :)

Last...and only...summer trip
I feel like summer break went so fast and I wonder...what did we do? I mean, I don't think summer should be non stop fun and games for kids. They still need to do their chores and do a little bit of learning each day and life should be kind of normal. But I guess it just went so fast and I wish it wasn't over already. :( We did do lots of fun things, but we didn't really take a full family vacation which I kept wanting to happen but never really did. I can't wait for a better work schedule some day. ;) But we did take a fun short trip this last weekend up to Lake Placid. It was beautiful up there and nice and cool...even a little cold I would say. We stayed in a hotel and swam in the pool (where Annie swallowed so much water she threw up her yummy Adirondack chocolate....but I digress).
The highlights:
1. Christopher lost his 3rd tooth.
2. Jacob started actually crawling on hands and knees instead of the army crawl. (I attribute it to the carpet at the hotel. With hard wood floors at home it is so much faster to just slide around on your belly).
3. We went to the summit of Whiteface Mtn. and saw the amazing view of Lake Placid and rode the elevator INSIDE the mountain.
4. We attended the most amazing little LDS branch that was actually only like a minute down the road from our hotel.
5. We ate at a yummy local pizza restaurant.
6. We ate way too much "non real" food.
7. And Annie threw up her "Candy Man Adirondack Chocolates" in the pool (well technically all over me and the stairs by the pool....yuck....and then she was upset when we insisted on going back to the room and not swim anymore).
8. We found the coolest school playground that was huge and like a giant castle. The kids loved it.
What a fun trip!! School starts tomorrow. (boo hoo and yeah)

Running for Class President
I finally took some 6 year old pictures of Christopher. It's too hard to take kids to a studio to have them done so we just snap some outside. He wanted to take a picture with his scooter. This one looks like a campaign picture for when Christopher runs for senior class president. (I can totally see him doing that someday....something I never would have been brave enough to do) :)
Classic !
This is one of those pictures we'll show to Annie' future husband, just to tease her. :) Isn't she so cute!

A bike ride and a trip to the zoo
Michael learned to ride a bike without training wheels! Yeah! He is so proud of himself and so are the rest of us!!
We went to the Turtle Back Zoo today. It's a great little zoo that you can cover in a couple of hours easy. Favorite animals:
Christopher: snake and prarie dogs
Michael: snake and leopard
Annie: prarie dogs and bear
Jacob: ??
Christopher has a funny look on his face in the bottom picture because he was trying to figure out why people kept throwing money in the little fountain behind them. It seemed like a waste to him...he wanted to fish all the money out of the pond. :)

Seriously!
Update on the cucumbers: So, just today I noticed like 4 more cucumbers growing that I'm positive weren't there last night when I checked. Maybe the big rainstorm last night with all the thunder scared them into growing. Looks like maybe I'll be able to make pickles afterall. :)
Look at all those teeth! And he's not even quite 10 months old yet. He has a funny look on his face in this picture, but I think he's the cutest kid around (along with his brothers and sister) :)

The Lone Cuke
So I have a small pot garden in the backyard. I planted tomatoes, green beans and cucumbers. The tomatoes and green beans grew just fine. The cucumber, on the other hand, is a strange story. The plant has grown like crazy....all over the place....up and down the fence. But every day I look and there are no cucumbers. Until today! Finally, one cucumber. Just one! Look at this plant! Why are there not tons of cucumbers on this plant?! Any gardeners out there want to give me any advice? Mistie, I know you're a gardener...what did I do wrong? The only thing I can think of is that I put too many plants in one pot. I should have only put in one plant, but the box came with like 4 and I didn't want to plant them all in separate pots. Call me lazy. :) Oh well, I guess we will enjoy this one cucumber. It better taste super good!!!

Balloon Festival
We went to a balloon festival in Readington NJ this last Saturday. We had to get up at 4 am because the balloons took off at 6:30 am and it was about an hour away. The kids slept the whole way which is always nice. It was a very hot humid day...even at 6:30 in the morning. I don't think the kids really knew what to expect until the balloons started rising from the ground. It was an amazing site to see so many of them. They also had some sky divers which was cool to see. I think our favorite balloon was the barn one and Annie's favorite was the pink one....if there is anything pink it's always her favorite. Unfortunately, not long after they started going off the wind picked up a little bit and they said that if the wind is even 10 mph then the balloons can't take off. So a lot of the large special shaped balloons didn't make it up. We kept rooting for the flag balloon which was almost all the way done when the wind kind of blew it around and it had to go down. It was kind of sad. I'm sure it's a lot of work for them to put those balloons up and then not be able to take off would be difficult. But we had a great time and when we got home we all took a nice long nap since we had woken up so early. It was a fun morning.
Play Kitchen Phase 2- Rebuild
The first shelf is going to be the oven so I'm going to paint it a dark gray color like the inside of an oven. The oven door isn't on yet...it will look much better once it is. :)

15 minute project
I like projects that come up quickly since with 4 kids I rarely have more than 15 minutes before someone needs something (ie. food, diaper change, reading, playing, etc.) Annie was asking for a crown today so I made this one up with felt and jewels since I have a ton of them. I love it when she wants girly things especially since lately the boys have been on a real Rescue Heroes kick and Annie usually joins in the fun. I frequently hear, " It's GO time! Think like a Rescue Hero. Think Safe." It sounds extra cute coming from Annie. :)

9 months old
Jacob is 9 months old and really starting to come alive. It seems that when they start crawling they really start to get more of their personality and opinions. Jacob is still generally a happy, content baby. He does have a funny growl that comes out when he's mad or hungry. It's actually kind of cute though. At his 9 month appointment he was at the 50% mark for height and weight and 95% for head....so he's definitely one of our kids. We think their large heads just make them look very smart and authoritative. :) He still has no hair, but that's also par for the course with our kids. The funniest thing is that he has 8 teeth already...yes, 8!!! All my kids get their teeth on the early side, but Jacob has 4 large top teeth that give him the cutest grin in the world. We just love our little bug and I can't believe he's going to be a year old pretty soon.
You can see his teeth in this video.
He is crawling all over the place. I forgot how hard it is to keep crawlers out of everything.

Hill Cumorah Pageant
Last weekend we went to the Hill Cumorah Pageant in Palmyra New York. We've been up to Palmyra several times to see the church sites but never during pageant time so this was a first for us. Our friends, the Crabtree's were there as well so we sat together and had a good time. We got there 3 hours early and got pretty good seats. The kids were troopers even though we were there for so long. They all enjoyed the show, except Christopher got a little scared during all the fire and Abinadi getting burned at the stake. Through a child's eye's you realize that the Book of Mormon is a little scary sometimes. :) My favorite was Annie saying, "Mom, they said commandments. We have commandments!" They all enjoyed the scene where Jesus comes down to the Nephites. We went to church the next day, then walked through the Sacred Grove and then drove home. All in all, it was a fun trip.
This Nephite was named Jacob too!

4th of July in Secaucus
Their first experience with cotton candy...they liked it!
Don't worry, I didn't really let him eat the this whole piece of chicken by himself, even though he could have.

Happy Birthday Christopher!
Christopher is a great big brother.
Christopher is a loyal friend and is really good with younger kids.
Christopher can be a real goofy kid sometimes. :)
Christopher loves anything sweet. (But he'll also eat his vegetables...he's a good kid)
Christopher looks forward to being a missionary and practices tracking with Michael and giving discussions.
Christopher is really good at puzzles.
Christopher is the greatest 6 year old I know. WE LOVE YOU CHRISTOPHER!

Father's are Great!
We love our dad! Jeff is a wonderful husband and father and yesterday was such a fun day. Generally, we don't prefer afternoon church, but on special days it's nice to be able to relax and spend time together in the mornings. We made Jeff breakfast in bed and the kids enjoyed helping him open his presents. Hopefully the boys will get better at buying presents as they get older because they both bought him balls, which is more a present for them than dad. :) Church was wonderful and we had a fun dinner in the evening. The best part of the day for me was that Jeff let ME take a long nap and did the dishes while I was sleeping. It felt more like Mother's Day to me. What a blessing our dad is to us. Love you honey!!!

Same Size
These two little bugs now where the same size diapers. Crazy!!! They are 2 years apart and I just moved Jacob up to a size 3 which is the same as Annie. They are kind of big on Jacob, but honestly, they are big on Annie too. (I know, I should potty train her....and she could do it...but doesn't want to yet, so I don't push it until they are ready). Before we know it, Jacob is going to get bigger than Annie and people are going to think he's older than her. :)

Kindergarten Play
What fun! The play was called "Rollin' Through the Decades" and they had narrative, songs and dance from the 1920's through today. Luckily they tape it and you can buy a DVD because our video camera went on the fritz right at the beginning. I got Christopher's part on the digital camera though, so enjoy! He's the disco kid on the very left.
